Gabriel Scotti & Vincent Hänni (CH) – musicians
Gabriel Scotti and Vincent Hänni began working together in Geneva in 1994. They have worked closely, composing sound tracks for films and for many other musical, theatrical and radio projects. In 2013, their composition for Peter Mettler’s film The End of Time was nominated in the “Best sound track” category at the Quartz Swiss Film awards. To this day, they have composed sound tracks for thirty or so films.
Gabriel Scotti
Musician and composer Gabriel Scotti was born in Geneva in 1968. A trained pianist and bass guitarist, he turned to electronic music and for many years has devoted himself to composition, research and experimentation. Playing the bass guitar in groups and composing for cinema, theatre and contemporary dance has allowed Scotti to focus on more abstract musical forms. He has worked for live dance performances with Cie Vertical Danse (Noemi Papzeson) and for spoken word performances with comedian Carlo Brandt.
Gabriel Scotti focuses on unconventional perceptions of sound. His passion for modal jazz and the energy that one chord can generate has brought him to steer clear of the mainstream, towards samplers and computer music, via rock music. Experimentation and sensitivity are the watchwords of his work.
Vincent Hänni
Vincent Hänni was born in Geneva in 1972. A trained guitarist, he has always been fascinated with sound and sound experimentation. In 2007, he joined The Young Gods with whom he has recorded several albums and toured internationally. He enjoys modular synthesis as much as playing acoustic instruments such as the guitar and the lute. He regularly works with musicians and artists on the experimental music and theatre scene in Switzerland. These include Jacques Demierre, Maya Bösch, Cindy van Acker, and Cave 12, to name but a few.
Vincent Hänni approaches music as material that can be bent and twisted. He enjoys playing with different stylistic frameworks and conventions in order to ‘shake them up’, and to underline the strengths and the tensions that run through them. He aims to avoid standardisation, to reach new heights and to blend his music into this material.
STATEMENT OF INTENT
“A sound theme; mixed colours. Coherence that should be maintained from beginning to end.”
When composing, Gabriel Scotti and Vincent Hänni’s perspective is environmental. They see composition as an entity that interweaves itself in its own way. They create sounds, which they subject to transformation and radical metamorphosis in order to put them into perspective and compose their sound tracks.
Once the colour of the film is defined, this sound machine is put in place. What is essential for the composers is the texture and how it takes shape: the movements, connections, tensions and easement that exist between image, sound and plan.
Their approach aims to allow space for the picture and to create music that opens up new perspectives. Contrary to the standard practice of underlining emotions and actions, they aim for music that distances itself from such systematic illustration.
Although their approach is intellectual and infused with scientific processes, Scotti and Hänni aim to provide highly physical and sensitive results.
